    On Tuesday, December 4, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., our annual Holiday Tree Lighting event will be held at The Beltrone Living Center. This event is open to the public and free of charge. Joining us again this year is the Mendelssohn Club of Albany. Since its inception in 1909, this male chorus has become the longest continuously performing arts group in the Capital District of New York State. Join us for a wonderful evening of seasonal music, fellowship, and friendship to start the holiday season.

    Please join us for a conversation with Paul Grondahl, Director of the New York State Writers Institute at the State University of New York, on Wednesday, December 5, from 12 noon to 1 p.m. Paul will discuss his years as a staff writer at the Times Union, his mission at the WritersInstitute, and a new book about William Kennedy. The book is titled “Bootlegger of the Soul: The Literary Legacy of William Kennedy,” and chronicles Albany and its fascinating story, from 1930 to today. The book will be available for purchase.   • Healthy Bones for Life Leader Training

    The Beltrone Living Center 6 Winners Circle, Albany, NY, United States

    Healthy Bones for Life is a community-based exercise and education program, made possible by a partnership between Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital and Colonie Senior Service Centers, Inc., that promotes bone health. The exercise program consists of weight-bearing exercises, muscle strengthening, flexibility, posture training, and balance exercises. These exercises, along with a healthy diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, have been shown to help maintain and improve bone health. Healthy Bones for Life classes are led by trained volunteers that instruct group members on how to perform the exercises and provide educational handouts.   • Outing to Capital Holiday Lights in the Park

    On Monday, December 10, CSSC will sponsor a complimentary evening outing to Capital Holiday Lights in the Park, a spectacular show with over 125 light displays and scenes shown throughout historic Washington Park in Albany. After we drive through the park, we will stop by the Lake House to enjoy all sorts of crafts, costumed characters, refreshments, and even Santa himself. The underwriting of this excursion is made possible by a grant secured by Albany County Legislator Peter Crouse. (Thank you Legislator Crouse!)   • Alcohol Ink Art Class

    Please join us on Tuesday, January 22, 2019, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, for a hands-on art class instructed by local multi-media artist Marjorie Ward who will introduce attendees to the medium of alcohol inks. Alcohol inks are an acid-free, highly-pigmented, and fast drying medium used on non-porous surfaces. Mixing colors can create a vibrant marbled effect and the possibilities are limited only by what one is willing to try.   • February’s Sacred Space Visit – St. Joseph Church

    The journey continues on Wednesday, February 20, as we visit another area sacred space. Join Diane Conroy-LaCivita as she travels to St. Joseph Church in South Troy. St. Joseph Church, once referred to as the "Ironworker's Church," was founded May 2, 1847, by Fr. Peter Havermans. In 1848 the Church, serving a mostly Irish-American Community in South Troy, came under the care of Jesuits.     The Culinary Institute of America (CIA) is an American private college and culinary school specializing in culinary, baking, and pastry arts education. As part of a recently awarded grant, CSSC will be visiting the CIA in Hyde Park on Friday, June 28, for a guided tour followed by an optional lunch at Ristorante Caterina de’Medici. Space is limited.   • Community Artist for July and August – Elizabeth “Libby” Lee

    The Beltrone Living Center 6 Winners Circle, Albany, NY, United States

    Libby Lee was a career art instructor and beloved teacher at Shaker High School. After she retired in 1983, she spent time volunteering at the Shaker Heritage Society and for the Friends of Pruyn House. The founder of the Friends of Pruyn House often asked Libby to help by sketching one of the buildings at the Pruyn House site.
