SUMMARY:National Lasagna Day - Monday\, July 29
DESCRIPTION:We hope you have a big appetite. Sure\, it’s July. It is hot and humid. Cooking up a pan of lasagna would make the kitchen a lot hotter. However\, the smell will waft. Your mouth will begin to water and when mealtime arrives\, you will have a huge appetite for a big piece of lasagna. \nLasagna is a favorite Italian dish. In between multiple layers of lasagna pasta are generous amounts of tomato sauce\, cheeses\, and sometimes hamburger and/or Italian sausage and/or possibly a variety of vegetables. It is the favorite Italian dish enjoyed by millions of Americans. \nIt is best to celebrate National Lasagna Day by baking the lasagna. Come join us on July 29 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. as we demonstrate how to make a variety of lasagnas. (Oh and yes\, bring your appetite!) \nThis demonstrations will take place at King Thiel Senior Community\, 17 Elks Lane\, Latham\, with a non-refundable $5 fee and will include lunch. Space is limited and prepayment for the class is required. To make a reservation\, please call Sharon Herald at 518-459-2857 ext. 302.

SUMMARY:July's Sacred Space Visit - Siena College's Grotto and Chapel
DESCRIPTION:The journey continues on Thursday\, July 18\, as we visit another sacred space. Join Diane Conroy-LaCivita as she travels to Siena College in Loudonville. Named after Bernardino of Siena\, a 15th-century Italian Franciscan friar and preacher\, Siena College was founded by the Order of Friars Minor in 1937. St. Bernardine of Siena Friary\, which is located on campus\, is home to twenty-three Franciscan friars many of whom serve as professors\, administrators\, and staff members. \nThe Grotto at Siena College is modeled after the famous shrine in Lourdes\, France\, where\, in the 19th century\, the Blessed Mother appeared to a peasant 14-year-old girl who would later become St. Bernadette. The Grotto at Siena College includes a statue of Mary from the original Siena grotto that was dedicated in 1947 in remembrance of veterans and those who had fallen in World War II\, including thirty-six Siena men who made the supreme sacrifice. \nFather Dan Dwyer will lead the tour\, which will include both the college’s chapel as well as the grotto. Please wear comfortable footwear. There will be walking involved. \nThe CSSC shuttle bus will leave The Beltrone Living Center at 9:40 a.m. and return at approximately 11:45 a.m. To make a reservation\, please call Sharon herald at 518-459-2857 ext. 302.

SUMMARY:The Art of Simple Food in Upstate NY
DESCRIPTION:Eating local in New York can mean a lot of things—locally baked bread\, locally grown produce\, locally brewed beer. \nJuly is the perfect time of year to sample local and there is no better place than your local farmers’ market to purchase these delicacies. For example\, you can find amazing produce that is tastier and healthier than anything found in a supermarket. You can meet the individuals who created the product and/or grew the produce. And you normally can experience the best “dog watching” around. \nPlease join us on Wednesday\, July 17\, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. as we cook and assemble recipes utilizing local. The demonstrations will take place at King Thiel Senior Community\, 17 Elks Lane\, Latham\, with a non-refundable $5 fee and will include lunch. Space is limited and prepayment for the class is required. To make a reservation\, please call Sharon Herald at 518-459-2857 ext. 302.

Barbecue is practiced in many areas of the world. \nBarbecuing techniques include smoking\, roasting\,  baking\, and grilling. The technique for which it is named involves cooking using smoke at low temperatures and long cooking times (several hours). Baking uses an oven to convection cook with moderate temperatures for an average cooking time of about an hour. Grilling is done over direct\, dry heat\, usually over a hot fire for a few minutes. \nOn Friday\, June 21\, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.\, come learn and taste barbecuing techniques. \nThe above demonstrations will take place at King Thiel Senior Community\, 17 Elks Lane\, Latham\, with a $5 fee and will include lunch. SUMMARY:February’s Sacred Space Visit - St. Joseph Church
DESCRIPTION:The journey continues on Wednesday\, February 20\, as we visit another area sacred space. Join Diane Conroy-LaCivita as she travels to St. Joseph Church in South Troy. \nSt. Joseph Church\, once referred to as the “Ironworker’s Church\,” was founded May 2\, 1847\, by Fr. Peter Havermans. In 1848 the Church\, serving a mostly Irish-American Community in South Troy\, came under the care of Jesuits. \nThe church building is Gothic\, cruciform in shape\, and erected in the basic style of the 13th century architecture. The Main Altar was built of purest statuary marble and onyx\, upon which DeVinci’s Last Supper is carved in Italian Carrara marble. The Stations were imported from Munich\, Germany\, and St. Joseph Church is host to the second largest collection of Tiffany Stained Glass Windows in the United States. Sometime between 1902-1912\, the Pulpit and Baptistry were added. The Baptistry is complete with Tiffany stained glass depictions of St John the Baptist\, Mary\, and the infant\, Jesus. \nThe CSSC shuttle bus will leave The Beltrone Living Center at 9:30 a.m. and return at approximately 11:30 a.m. \nTo make a reservation\, please call Sharon Herald at 518-459-2857 ext. 302.

SUMMARY:Chocolate Anyone?
DESCRIPTION:There are only so many kinds of food people treasure. “Craved\, savored and given as a symbol of one’s love. Yet\, so common it can be purchased for 50 cents. This treasured\, as well as commonplace item is chocolate” (CNN\, 1997). \nAmericans eat up to twelve pounds of chocolate every year\, but we are not the winners by far when it comes to chocolate consumption—that honor goes to the Swiss\, who wolf down twenty-two pounds a year. \nIt is hard to think of a Valentine’s Day plan that does not involve food\, specifically\, dessert\, even more specifically\, a chocolate dessert. Join CSSC staff on Tuesday\, February 12\, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.\, as we demonstrate several of our favorite chocolate recipes. \nThe class will take place at King Thiel Senior Community\, 17 Elks Lane\, with a $5 fee and will include lunch. Space is limited and prepayment for the class is required. To make a reservation\, please call Sharon Herald at 518-459-2857 ext. 302.

SUMMARY:Sacred Space Visit – St. Peter’s Episcopal Church
DESCRIPTION:The journey continues on Tuesday\, December 18\, as we visit another sacred space. Join Diane Conroy-LaCivita as she travels to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in downtown Albany. \nSt. Peter’s Episcopal Church has served as an active center of worship for over three hundred years. Barclay soon oversaw the building of the first Anglican church in Albany and the first service was held in this edifice in November of 1716. Two more churches were built subsequently near the site of the original church. The current St. Peter’s Church is the third structure in the parish’s history\, the first having been built in 1715. \nThe CSSC shuttle bus will leave The Beltrone Living Center at 9:30 a.m. and return at approximately 11:45 a.m. Don’t miss this opportunity to visit this beautiful historic sacred space.
