SUMMARY:November’s Sacred Space: Good Shepherd Evangelical Lutheran Church
DESCRIPTION:The journey continues on Thursday\, November 21\, as we visit another sacred space. Join Diane Conroy-LaCivita as she travels to Good Shepherd Evangelical Lutheran Church in Loudonville. \nLutheranism is one of the largest branches of Protestantism that identifies with the teachings of Martin Luther\, a 16th-century German reformer. Luther’s efforts to reform the theology and practice of the church launched the Protestant Reformation. \nOver fifty-five years ago\, there was a response to a community in need. In August 1960\, the Board of American Missions of the Lutheran Church in America sponsored a mission developer who undertook a door-to-door religious survey in the Loudonville area. As a result of the interest shown by residents of the area\, Good Shepherd Evangelical Lutheran Church was officially organized on April 16\, 1961. The first church building was constructed in 1965 at its current site. In 1988\, a new sanctuary and entry were built\, along with extensive renovations to the original building. Additional renovations took place in 2013. \nThe Group will meet with the Reverend Edwina Landry and will be provided a tour of this long-standing religious institution. Please wear comfortable shoes. \nThe CSSC shuttle will leave The Beltrone Living Center at 9:45 a.m. and return at approximately 11:15 a.m. Space is limited. To make a reservation\, please call Sharon Herald at 518-459-2857 ext. 302. \n  \n

SUMMARY:What It Means to be Incarcerated?
DESCRIPTION:Incarceration has four major purposes: retribution\, incapacitation\, deterrence\, and rehabilitation. Retribution means punishment for crimes against society. Depriving criminals of their freedom is a way of making them pay a debt to society for their crimes. Recently\, this topic is being debated and is under great scrutiny. \nJoin Diane on Thursday\, December 19 as she visits and tours the Albany County Correctional Facility\, which was built in 1931 in the Town of Colonie. Everyone who would like to attend must take CSSC transportation to and from the jail (individual cars will not be allowed)\, and attendees will not be allowed to take anything into the facility including handbags\, coats\, and phones. We will be leaving The Beltrone Living Center at 1:30 p.m. and returning at approximately 3:30 p.m. Space is limited. Please call Sharon Herald to make a reservation at 518-459-2857 ext. 302. \n

SUMMARY:Sacred Space Visit: St. Basil’s Russian Orthodox Church
DESCRIPTION:The journey continues on Friday\, January 10\, as we visit another sacred space. Join Diane Conroy-LaCivita as she travels to St. Basil’s Russian Orthodox Church on Lansing Avenue in Watervliet. \nSt. Basil’s parish celebrated its 100th Anniversary in 2001. The parish was formed by a group from the Sub Carpatho-Russian province of Galicia who had settled in the Maplewood area of the Town of Colonie. The church was established by nineteen men\, inspired by Father (now Saint) Alexander Hotovitsky\, who helped organize parishes all along the east coast. In January 1901\, the Brotherhood of St. Basil the Great was formed and His Grace\, Bishop Tikhon of the Aleutians and North America blessed the members of the Brotherhood to construct a church building. The congregation continued to grow and a new\, larger church became necessary and was blessed in September 1945. This church building remains to this day and has been the site of countless Sacraments and Blessings to the many generations of St. Basil’s parish. \nThe CSSC shuttle bus will leave The Beltrone Living Center at 9:30 am and return at approximately 11:30 a.m. Space is limited. To make a reservation\, please call Sharon Herald at 518-459-2857 ext. 302. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Easy as Pie
DESCRIPTION:Pie is as American as the Fourth of July. Through those first lean and hungry years in New England\, daring pioneer mothers contrived “pyes” out of a few simple foods at hand often experimenting as they went. The old expression “easy as pie” is now true. Over time\, pastry chefs and cooks alike have worked out simplified methods. No guessing as to the amount of water\, no chilling of the pastry\, no long\, laborious preparations for fillings. Today\, there are pies for special occasions\, pies from famous eating locations\, and pies for special holidays. \nOn Tuesday\, January 28\, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.\, CSSC staff will share and demonstrate how to make their favorite pie recipes. Attendees will be able to sample from a variety of different pies made. \nThe class will take place at King Thiel Senior Community\, 17 Elks Lane\, with a $5 fee for members of THE CENTER at CSSC and $7 for not-yet-members and will include a light lunch. Space is limited and prepayment for the class is required. To make a reservation\, please call Sharon Herald at 518-459-2857 ext. 302. \n

SUMMARY:International Women’s Day Celebration at CSSC
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Sunday\, March 8\, from 12 noon to 3 p.m.\, at The Beltrone Living Center for an International Women’s Day (IWD) celebration. \nIWD has occurred on March 8 for well over a century\, with the first organized gathering occurring in 1911. However\, the idea of IWD began a few years earlier when great unrest and critical debate was taking place amongst women. Women’s oppression and inequality was spurring women to become more vocal and active in campaigning for change. Then in 1908\, fifteen thousand women marched through New York City demanding shorter hours\, better pay\, and voting rights. IWD is not country\, group or organization specific; it belongs to all groups collectively everywhere. \nMake Women’s International Day Your Day. The wonderful things about International Women’s Day is the day is not country\, group or organizational specific; it belongs to all groups collectively everywhere. On March 8\, there will be informational sessions\, panels’ discussions\, table exhibitors\, music\, and all sorts of refreshments. \nSome of the individuals participating include: Congressman Paul Tonko (invited)\, Mayor Kathy Sheehan (invited)\, Rosemary Armao and Libby Post from WAMC’s Roundtable\, Lisa Robert Lewis (Times Union)\, local historian Kathy Sheehan\, genealogist Lisa Dougherty\, Jen Brown (Berkshire Eagle)\, Chef Joan Debinski\, business owner Rose Miller\, film producer Liz Koenig\, the Timeless Tappers\, and Taylor Dorado (Siena College soccer player). \nGroups/organizations who will be tabling include the Loisada Conservation Council Foundation (from Kenya)\, Hudson-Chatham Winery\, Hudson Valley Hand-Cut Scones\, the Albany Women’s Club\, DiviniTea\, the Food Pantries for the Capital District\, the Electric City Barn\, multi-media artists Marjorie Ward and Linda Guzzo\, National Museum of Racing\, the Irish-American Heritage Museum\, Shaker Heritage Society\, Fort Orange Garden Club\, Friends of Pruyn House\, the Meier Law Firm\, Piece d’Occasion\, The Phitgirl\, the League of Women Voters\, Girl Scout Troop 1350\, Heritage Home for Women\, and many\, many more. Come learn\, network and celebrate! \nFor additional information\, please call Diane at 518-459-2857 ext. 305. \n
