SUMMARY:May’s Healthy and Local Cooking Class – Farm Fresh Korean Cuisine
DESCRIPTION:Korean food is some of the healthiest on earth\, with an emphasis on vegetables\, meats cooked simply and without much oil\, and a near obsession with the fermented vegetable kimchi. \nMuch of the food that exists in Korea today and the customs surrounding it have come from royal cuisine and the complex customs of the ancient court. Please call Diane for questions or to register at 518-459-2857 ext. 305.

SUMMARY:Sacred Spaces – Redemption Church
DESCRIPTION:Please join Diane as she visits another sacred space\, Redemption Church located at 1511 6th Avenue in Watervliet on Tuesday\, March 29\, 2022. \nIn 1972\, Elder John Massey\, Jr. began a home Bible study held at his kitchen table. This home Bible study was a small sanctuary for nightly gatherings of prayer\, devotions\, and in-depth Bible study. The kitchen became too small for the group that began gathering on a regular basis\, so the services were moved to a small rented church building on Fifth Avenue. In less than a year\, the small church building was filled to capacity\, and the church relocated to 230 Second Street in Troy\, New York. After many years of use\, the building was sold\, and the congregation moved to its present location at 1511 6th Sixth Avenue in Watervliet\, New York in 2007. \nIn 1979\, Pastor Massey established Redemption Christian Academy (RCA) as an auxiliary of this organization Redemption Church of Christ to provide quality Christian education in a structured environment. His leadership ability\, commitment\, and dedication to the success of the programs offered by Redemption Church and Redemption Christian Academy have earned him local and national recognition: NYS Martin Luther King\, Jr. Humanitarian Award; Jefferson Award; Albany District Links Award; Martin Luther King\, Jr. Drum Major Award; and American Century Award. Since the school’s inception in 1979\, Redemption Christian Academy blossomed from a day school to a day and boarding school with a reputation for maintaining high standards for academics and character. \nIn addition to RCA\, Redemption Church of Christ has grown into a vibrant outreach ministry: Redemption Church of Christ Missions with domestic and international outreach\, Redemption Church Ministries\, Alive and Remain Ministries\, Women of Faith\, Sunday school and Children’s ministries\, Pathfinders and Teens Loving Christ (TLC)\, Soup for Seniors\, Home Bible Studies\, Radio and Internet broadcasting\, and New Saints classes. Redemption Church with its various outreaches and auxiliaries is making an impact both on the local community as well as on our international community. \nTo make a reservation\, please call Louis at 518-459-2857 ext. 340.\nFor those who would like transportation to and from\, we will be leaving from The Beltrone Living Center at 10:00 a.m. and returning at approximately 12:00 Noon.

SUMMARY:CSSC’s International Diners Club: For the Love of Food – December’s Outing
DESCRIPTION:Born in Nigeria and a resident of several regions of the country\, Kelechi Nwagboso moved to America a decade ago to join her husband\, a chemical engineer. Kelechi is her family’s eldest daughter and started cooking for them and assisting her mother\, who ran the cafeteria at a local cement factory\, when she was eight years old. She opened Keobi\, the Capital Region’s first restaurant dedicated to the flavors of West Africa\, on April 8\, 2020 to rave reviews. \nNigeria is the most populous country in Africa\, gaining its independence in 1960 after centuries of European rule. The legacy of Nigerian culinary practices ripple through Black communities\, as food traditionally thought apart of Black culture in America is built on the foundational techniques of West African cooking. Flavors and ideas from Nigeria can be found in the way a soul food or Caribbean restaurant prepares rice\, beans and stewed greens among other dishes. \nGet ready for December’s dining opportunity as we visit Keobi\, 189 Lark Street\, Albany on Monday\, December 6 at 4:00 PM. The cost of the meal is $39. Space is limited and registration is required. CSSC Transportation Services are available for those who are unable to drive themselves. SUMMARY:Sacred Space: St. Anthony of Padua
DESCRIPTION:After a long pause\, the journey continues on Friday\, September 17\, as we visit another sacred space. Join Diane as she travels to St. Anthony of Padua located on State Street in Troy. \nIn 1892\, Rev. John Santoro was given permission to organize the twenty-three Italian families living in Troy into a National Parish of St. Anthony of Padua. This small Italian community was permitted to celebrate Mass in the basement of St. Mary’s Church on Third Street. Since this arrangement did not facilitate the need for other sacraments\, such as baptism and reconciliation\, a small structure was obtained on Ferry Street\, southwest of Fifth Avenue\, and converted into the first St. Anthony of Padua Church. Many of the names of these first parishioners are still represented in the parish today. \nDue to large emigration and rapid growth at the turn of the century\, the parish was in need of a larger worship space. Luckily\, a structure was available at the corner of Fourth and State Street; a church built by the Unitarian Society in 1876. The structure was purchased by the parish in 1905\, renovated and dedicated on May 26\, 1907 by Rt. Rev. T.M.A. Burke\, Bishop of Albany. \nBetween 1957-65\, continued growth of the parish led to the acquisition of land on Fourth Street for a new school and rectory\, the first new buildings to be constructed in the parish’s sixty-year history. Soon a parish hall and gymnasium would follow. The parish hall would soon be used for a temporary church until a new worship site could be built. \nThe old church was demolished as plans developed for the current church to be built. On July 25\, 1963\, a plot of land was purchased from the City of Troy adjacent to Barker Park on State Street. A ground breaking ceremony for the new structure took place on May 27\, 1964\, joined by many city and county officials\, parishioners and friends. The current church\, with seating for four hundred\, was formally blessed on May 15\, 1965. \nThe CSSC shuttle bus will leave The Beltrone Living Center at 9:30 a.m. and return at approximately 11:30 a.m. Space is limited. To make a reservation\, please call Sharon Herald at 518-459-2857 ext. 302. \n
